The open
format
architect.
Nearly two decades behind the decks. Toronto-based, bookable anywhere. The job is simple: read the room, build the energy, keep guests in the room.
D1 built his reputation the old way: one room at a time. He started young, behind private-event decks in living rooms and basement parties, figuring out what made a floor move. Twenty years on, that instinct is the product.
He’s an open-format DJ. That’s a technical term with a simple meaning. He’ll move you from hip-hop to house to disco to whatever the room needs next, without the hard cuts and dead air that kill energy. The transitions are seamless because the goal isn’t the next song. It’s the next feeling.
These days, that work happens in three buckets. Residencies, where the same crowd comes back week after week and you have to keep raising your own bar. Branded events, where clients like the Ritz-Carlton, Nike, STACKT, and One Hotel trust him to set the tone of their nights. And private, where weddings and corporate programs and milestone parties all call for their own kind of read.
Outside Toronto, he’s played New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Edmonton, Vancouver, Montreal, and Halifax. Different rooms, same approach: listen first, then run the night.

“The best sets don't feel like sets. They feel like the only way the night could have gone.”
